  • Joanna Newsome

    joannanewsom-haveoneonme-aa-final

Joanna Newsome, a harpist, pianist and singer-songwriter, is getting ready to release a new triple album, Have One On Me, via Drag City on Feb. 28th.

I’m LOVING the Great Gatsby style cover art, and am wondering if that’s any indication of what to expect inside.

If you’ve never listened to Newsome, her early Celtic harp training is apparent and adds a lot of character to her already smart writing style. Her songs are heavily covered by peer musicians, including The Decemberists.

She’s also rumored to be dating SNL comedian Andy Samberg, who is one third of the musical comedy troupe Lonely Island. Could a collaboration be in the future? Harps on a Boat?

  • A Year of Mixtapes

    3190887883_5f8ca232a5

Ah, the mixtape! In today’s era of Mp3s, the art form known as the mixtape is not longer the go-to tool of love struck high school students hoping for a date.

But Chrissy Murderbot, a Chicago-based DJ and Producer, is keeping the art form alive in a neat year-long project. The DJ has been making one (really awesome) downloadable mixtape per week, and is posting and chronicling the evolution of this project on his blog.

Audio Architect Anida Gurlit really digs the booty bass mix.  There’s Rave, Garage, Dubstep mixes and more. Fun stuff! If you appreciate the art of the mixtape, be sure to check Chrissy Murderbot out.

  • Gustavo Cerati, Argentinean Rocker

CeratiAre you ever on the lookout for new rock music with a Latin flair? Argentinean rocker Gustavo Cerati has been creating Latin music since his days with the Bueno Aires rock band Soda Stereo in the 80s. After a decade-long career with the band, he ventured out to create a name for himself as a solo musician and producer.

His first solo disc was the 1999 masterpiece “Bocanada”, which merged innovative samba beats with electronic sounds. Cerati also collaborated with Andy Summers of The Police to create an amazing Latin version of “Bring on the Night”, which was included in the Latin tribute to the Police called “Outlandos D’Americas”.

Cerati now has a new disc titled “Fuerza Natural” (Natural Strength) which harks back to his days in Soda Stereo. This being his fifth solo release, the album has already reached gold status in Argentina with over 20,000 copies sold during its first week. He is considered a Latin rock legend and has played numerous festivals in the US, including one in New York during the Latin Alternative Music Festival.

  • Keytar Beats

    El-P

    El-P

In Pitchfork’s latest installment of Surveillance Videos, recorded at the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in New York, El-P (Company Flow/Def Jux) drops some signature rhymes from under the covers… quite literally. In a day and age where rappers’ creativity and ingenuity tends to decline, it’s refreshing to see an artist consistently get better at their craft.

And besides, when was the last time you saw someone make a beat with a keytar?

    Watch it here: http://pitchfork.com/tv/#/episode/2083-el-p/1
